How the Drilling Process Works

  1. Tool Selection: The process begins by choosing an appropriate drill bit, typically a rotary cutting tool with multiple cutting edges. Common types include twist drills, spade drills, and core drills.

  2. Workpiece Setup: The material to be drilled is securely clamped to prevent movement during the operation.

  3. Drilling Operation: The drill bit is rotated at high speeds (hundreds to thousands of revolutions per minute) and fed into the workpiece along the desired hole axis. The rotation of the drill bit shears material from the workpiece, forming a hole.

  4. Chip Removal: As the drill bit advances, it generates chips (also known as swarf) that are evacuated from the hole to prevent clogging and overheating. This is typically achieved using cutting fluids or air blasts.

  5. Finishing: After reaching the desired depth, the drill bit is retracted, and the hole may undergo additional processes like reaming or deburring to achieve the final specifications.
