Making Metal Shine: A Simple Guide to Plating for Precision Parts

Today, we’re going to look at one of the most common and effective armors: metal plating.

What is Metal Plating, Anyway?

At its simplest, metal plating is a process of applying a thin layer of one type of metal onto the surface of another. It’s like painting, but instead of paint, we use metal, and instead of a brush, we often use electricity! This results in a much stronger, more permanent bond that won’t peel off. Plating can be used on parts made by CNC turning or metal stamping, and even on parts that are later destined for metal assembly.

Why Do We Plate? It’s More Than Just Looks!

While a bright, shiny chrome or gold finish does look great, plating is first and foremost about function. There are three main reasons why we might plate a custom connector component or any other metal part:

1. Fighting Rust and Corrosion: The Protector

This is the most common reason. Metals like iron and regular steel can rust when they are exposed to air and water. Plating a part with a corrosion-resistant metal like zinc, nickel, or chrome is like giving it an anti-rust shield. In the picture above, you can see several parts with a silvery or yellowish-silver look—this is often zinc plating, a fantastic and cost-effective way to fight rust.

2. Boosting Strength and Durability: The Hardener

Sometimes a part’s base metal is strong but not very hard, meaning it can be easily scratched or worn down. Plating it with a hard metal, such as nickel or hard chrome, can dramatically increase its surface hardness. This makes the part much more durable and resistant to wear and tear. A connector component, for example, needs to withstand being plugged and unplugged thousands of times, so a hard plating like gold or silver is essential.

3. Improving Conductive or Non-Conductive Properties: The Electrical Engineer

Plating is also a powerful tool for controlling electricity. Metals like gold and silver are excellent conductors. For electronic connectors and contact pins, a very thin layer of gold can ensure a perfect, low-resistance electrical connection that will last for years. On the other hand, some types of plating can act as insulators, blocking electrical current and protecting sensitive components.

Different Types of Plating: A Right Armor for Every Part

Zinc Plating: The Reliable Guardian

This is the most popular form of plating for steel parts. It creates a great barrier against rust and is very economical. In the top photo (image 0), you can see multiple parts with a blue-silver (clear zinc) or a gold-yellow (yellow zinc) finish. It’s used on everything from screws and bolts to large industrial brackets. It’s not the best choice for beautiful decorative finishes, but for reliability and protection, it’s hard to beat.

Nickel Plating: The Polished Professional

Nickel plating offers a fantastic balance of beauty, durability, and corrosion resistance. It has a beautiful, polished appearance that is often mistaken for stainless steel or chrome. Nickel plating can be applied with or without electricity, and its excellent properties make it a standard choice for aerospace, automotive, and medical connector components.

Chrome Plating: The King of Hardness and Style

Chrome is the king of finishes when you want high-mirror shine and extreme surface hardness. Hard chrome is extremely hard and wear-resistant, used for industrial applications like piston rods. Decorative chrome is what you see on car bumpers or high-end bathroom fixtures—a thin layer of chrome over a layer of nickel to create a dazzling, tarnish-resistant finish.

More Than Plating: A World of Finishes

Plating isn’t the only way to protect a part. There are other powerful finishes like anodizing, which creates a protective, hard oxide layer on aluminum parts, often in bright, beautiful colors (like the black parts in the image below). There’s also passivation for stainless steel, which makes it even more rust-resistant, and chemical conversion coatings like black oxide or phosphate.
