Knurling

Knurling is a widely used process in manufacturing, conducted on a lathe. Using different sets of knurl tooling, a pattern of straight, angled or crossed lines is rolled into the material. Concave knurls are sometimes used for knurling rounded edges on screw heads.

The purpose is to creating an area that provides a strong grip, often used for optical adjusting dials or screw-on components.
